Research and Markets: Clocks and Watches in Italy

DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/nbhnp2/clocks_and)

has announced the addition of the “Clocks

and watches in Italy – Main players”
report to their offering.

This report supplies information on the competitors typologies of the

Clocks and watches Italian market: types of operators, by segment, by

nationality or ownership structure, ranking of companies in terms of

turnover, net income, competitive positions, breakdown by business

segment, regional breakdown, are studied in depth in this report.

Scope

This report covers various kinds of watches and clocks.

Product technology

Based on the timekeeping technology, three main types of clocks can be

distinguished:

  • mechanical clocks, which can in turn be divided into those powered

    manually (by winding) and those powered automatically;

  • quartz clocks, where the passage of time is measured using the

    oscillations of a quartz crystal;

  • clocks with complex movement mechanisms, such as those with functions

    beyond indicating hours and minutes (e.g. the exact date even in leap

    years, lunar cycles and stopwatch functions). The most difficult

    mechanisms to produce include minute repeaters (tones that signal each

    minute) and the tourbillon (an additional mechanism used to regulate

    the timekeeping device to counter the effects of gravity).

  • Based on the time display, there are two main types of clocks:

  • Analog clocks, where two hands move above a dial with a circular scale

    used to indicate hours, minutes and seconds. The hands generally, but

    not always, share a common axis. Chronograph watches often have

    smaller dials set within the main dial.

  • Digital clocks, normally with a liquid crystal display (LCD) that

    shows the precise time.

  • Function:

  • watches: beyond the original function of telling time, watches have

    increasingly become showpieces, status symbols, sometimes even

    investments (for the most prestigious products) and fashion

    accessories (for the more accessibly priced products);

  • clocks: beyond telling time, clocks also function as home furniture

    pieces.

  • Client categories:

  • intermediate clients: the various types of retailers of watches, table

    clocks, wall clocks and longcase clocks, including jewellery shops,

    supermarkets, clothing shops, department stores, sporting goods

    stores, furniture stores and objets d’art specialty shops;

  • end clients, i.e. consumers, which can be subdivided based on age, sex

    or lifestyle.

Franck Muller Giga Gong Tourbillon Watch: Big, Loud

18ab6 Franck Muller Giga Gong Tourbillon1

When Swiss watch maker Franck Muller released the original “Giga Tourbillon” watch several years ago it was a statement to both collectors and the watch industry. With the Giga Tourbillon Franck Muller had produced the largest diameter tourbillon ever made. A source of pride for the brand, it asserted itself as still being an innovator to the watch industry – just a few years after having serious problems in light of the financial crisis. To collectors, it was a sign of hope that “Franck Muller’s still got it.” So what is a tourbillon and why is it important? Many ultra-high-end watches include movements with a balance wheel that spins on its own axis – which is a tourbillon. Both complicated and beautiful, tourbillons are a sort of status symbol in the context of high-end horology that are bred to mean “prestige and wealth.” And as status symbols go, Franck Muller wanted theirs to be the largest. How big is the Giga’s tourbillon? Occupying about half of the watch, the tourbillon cage is 20mm wide. That alone is the size of some women’s watches.

Set in a super-sized version of the brand’s iconic tonneau-shaped “curvex” case, the Giga Tourbillon features a skeletonized dial that looks amusing like a surprised face. The two large mainspring barrels are like the eyes (with synthetic ruby jewels as the pupils), while the tourbillon is like a mouth agape. Symmetrical design is common in mechanical watch movements, we I can’t help but feel that brands such as Franck Muller are producing “face-like” watch faces on purpose. Perhaps has a good way for people to connect with their watch?

The original Franck Muller Giga Tourbillon – as well as this new version – both feature generous power reserves for the movement. Those two large 16mm wide spring barrels hold enough energy to power the movement for nine days. The original manually wound movement has been updated for 2013 with the release of the Giga Gong Tourbillon. “Giga Gong” sounds even more silly to say that “Giga Tourbillon,” but it does cleverly sum up what the watch is all about. “Gong” refers to a set of gongs and hammers included in the watch as part of its striking hour complication. Like clocks of old, the purpose of a striking hour watch is to chime at the top of each hour.

Striking hour watches do fortunately have an on and off function, which is activated by a pusher under the crown. Another more classic term for striking hour watch is “sonnerie,” though sonnerie watches can come in a range of forms. This one happens to strike each hour. Not only that, but the mechanism “states the hour” by chiming enough times to indicate what hour it is “two chimes for 2 o’clock). Dedicated watch enthusiasts have probably picked up something quirky about the watch – the gong isn’t round.

This is something I am curious to investigate myself. On the left of the dial is a hammer used to strike against a thin piece of metal that typically wraps itself around a movement. Often times round, in this case the gong is more square, in order to follow the shape of the 18k rose gold case. Visually and functionally the Giga Gong Tourbillon is beautiful with its open movement and high level of decoration. The black “giga” tourbillon case with its Franck Muller “FM” initially completes the package. Both visually and literally this is a big and loud watch meant for those who want a serious statement on their wrist.

Stuhrling Original Men"s 127A.3315C2 "Special Reserve Emperor"s Grandeur" Stainless Steel and Blue Leather Automatic Skeleton Watch

Stuhrling1. V397749070
Stuhrling Original’s Special Reserve collection was created to honor the timepieces we’ve produced that deserve extra attention. Some of our finest and most well known watches can be found here, and this is especially true when you’re talking about the Old World Treasure Series. We’ve included horologic wonders here that shock and amaze from the moment you first set eyes on them with full intention on keeping your attention for years to come. Here is the latest addition to the series: the Emperor’s Grandeur.

True to its name, the Grandeur makes an exceptionally grand impression; this watch doesn’t just feature one or two details that make it stand out. The entire piece as a whole is bold, imposing, beautiful, and has a commanding presence that can’t be found anywhere else. A spectacular achievement of craftsmanship, the Grandeur bears a few similarities to its predecessor, the Emperor, but this timepiece is larger by 8mm, bringing the case size to 50mm. Whereas the Emperor features an open heart complication that displays the balance wheel, the Grandeur is completely skeletal, and on top of that, it is a pure mechanical watch, the way watches were made over two hundred years ago. The movement, ST-91011 caliber, was tested and certified by our highly trained and certified watch makers has 22-jewels and powers the balance wheel at 21,600 vibrations per hour. On top of that, the Emperor’s Grandeur has an amazing 60 hour power reserve. That’s five days on a pure mechanical movement.

The massive case was blanked from solid bars of 316L surgical grade stainless steel, and along with our very own Krysterna crystals, this handsome timepiece is rugged and well protected in form and stature. Equipped with an alligator embossed genuine leather strap, strapping on the Emperor’s Grandeur will give you a commanding presence that cannot be ignored.
